What should a granite paving installation quotation include?
A clear quotation should identify excavation and waste removal, the sub-base material and compacted depth, bedding and primer, drainage, jointing, cutting and edge work. It should also state who supplies each material, what is excluded and how unforeseen ground conditions or design changes will be priced and approved.
Should granite paving be inspected before it is laid?
Yes. Check the delivery against the order, then inspect colour range, finish, dimensions and condition before cutting or fixing the stone. Photograph anything that needs clarification and set those pieces aside while contacting the supplier. Review representative slabs from different crates rather than judging the whole delivery from one top piece.
Do granite paving slabs need a full mortar bed and slurry primer?
For the conventional bonded patio installation covered here, specify a full supporting mortar bed and a compatible slurry primer or bonding bridge across each slab's underside. Spot bedding and isolated primer patches are not substitutes. Alternative engineered systems require their own approved construction details.
Can 20 mm granite patio slabs be used for a driveway?
Do not assume so. A product suitable for pedestrian paving is not automatically suitable for vehicles. Confirm the specific slab or sett dimensions, strength, loading and complete construction before ordering for a driveway, including any patio edge that vehicles might cross.

1. Confirm the Product and Intended Use
Record the exact granite range, format, thickness and finish. “Grey granite patio” is not a complete specification: different products can have different dimensions, surface textures and performance. Check that the selected finish is appropriate for wet outdoor walking conditions.
Identify uses beyond ordinary foot traffic, including vehicle overrun, a hot tub, a heavy outdoor kitchen or other concentrated loads. These may affect the design of the supporting construction. Do not rely on the stone's hardness alone.
For a driveway or entrance detail, granite setts may offer a useful format, but their suitability still needs to be confirmed for the actual loading and installation.
2. Measure the Layout and Calculate the Complete Order
Measure the paved area and draw the slab layout with joints included. Mark doors, drains, covers, steps, curves and visible edges. Check where cuts will occur and whether narrow slivers can be avoided by adjusting the starting line.
Calculate the allowance from the actual cutting pattern rather than adding an arbitrary number of slabs. Small areas with many obstacles can need a higher percentage allowance than a larger, straightforward rectangle. Count borders and step components separately, and check whether stated pack coverage includes joint spacing.
Consider retaining spare pieces for future repairs. Ordering them with the main supply can reduce the difficulty of matching a later batch, although natural variation remains possible within one delivery.
3. Agree Finished Levels, Thresholds and Drainage
Identify the damp-proof course, air bricks, door openings, wall drainage outlets, inspection covers and neighbouring surfaces before setting levels. Confirm the high and low points of the paving and the route water will take to its intended outlet.
For conventional external wall details in England, Approved Document C gives a minimum 150 mm separation between the damp-proof course and adjoining ground, subject to its stated design provisions. Check the applicable guidance for the project's UK nation and building detail.
A drainage channel is not a complete threshold design: Do not raise paving beside a wall or doorway simply because a channel will be fitted. Reduced-level or accessible thresholds need coordinated moisture protection, drainage and ventilation details. Keep air bricks and drainage openings unobstructed.
Ask for the proposed fall to be stated numerically and shown on the plan. For example, a specified fall of 1:80 means 12.5 mm per metre, or 50 mm over 4 metres. This illustrates the level difference; it is not a universal fall specification for every granite surface.

4. Specify Excavation and the Supporting Construction
Agree the excavation depth from the finished paving level and the proposed layer thicknesses. Identify underground services and drainage routes before digging, and assess soft ground, disturbed soil and existing paving foundations before deciding what can be retained.
The specification should name the sub-base material, its compacted thickness and the compaction method. A loose delivery depth is not the same as the final compacted depth. Ground conditions and loading determine the required construction; one standard depth does not suit every site.
Agree how unexpected conditions will be documented and approved before extra work proceeds. This is particularly useful where excavation could reveal old foundations, buried rubble or poorly compacted fill.
5. Include Bedding, Primer and Jointing in the Specification
For a bonded granite patio, confirm full mortar support and a compatible primer applied across the underside immediately before laying, following the system instructions. Ensure the named materials and application work are included in the price.
Select the jointing product before fixing the slab spacing. Check both the minimum width and the usable depth, together with compatibility with the bedding and drainage. A product requiring a 25 mm joint depth cannot fit within a 20 mm slab thickness alone.

6. Arrange Delivery, Storage and Slab Handling
Confirm the delivery vehicle requirements, unloading method and accessible drop-off location with the supplier or carrier. Do not assume a pallet truck can travel over gravel, steps, soft ground or steep slopes, or that delivery includes moving crates into the rear garden.
Measure gates, side passages and turns along the route to the work area. Agree suitable handling equipment and sufficient labour for the slab format. Provide a stable storage area that leaves room for inspection and keeps access routes clear.
Allow time between delivery and installation for checking the materials and resolving any discrepancy. An estimated arrival date should not be the sole basis for an inflexible labour booking.
7. Inspect the Stone before Cutting or Fixing
Check labels, product details and quantities against the order. Photograph the packaging and any apparent transit damage, then inspect slabs as crates are safely opened. Retain identifying labels so questions can be linked to the delivery.
Compare colour and texture under similar conditions: a wet slab may appear darker than a dry one. Lay out representative pieces to agree the natural variation and distribution before work proceeds. Where appropriate, select across packs to avoid obvious clusters of contrasting tones.
Resolve uncertain pieces first: Set aside slabs with an unexpected appearance, apparent crack or dimensional concern and contact the supplier before cutting or laying those pieces. Distinguish natural mineral variation from possible damage through inspection rather than assumption.
8. Plan Cuts, Edges and Safe Working Areas
Agree the treatment of visible cut edges, step fronts and inspection covers. Keep covers accessible and specify the support or restraint needed at open paving edges. Identify movement details where the construction requires them.
Provide a cutting area away from occupied spaces and protect nearby glazing, vehicles and finished surfaces from slurry and debris. Granite cutting can generate respirable crystalline silica. 9. Agree Weather Protection, Curing and Handover
Check the bedding, primer and jointing instructions for application temperatures, rain protection and curing. The programme should allow work to pause when conditions are unsuitable rather than forcing installation to meet a fixed finish date.
Record when people can walk on the surface, when furniture or vehicles may return and when cleaning can begin. These timings depend on the materials and conditions; completion of laying does not mean the paving is ready for unrestricted use.
At handover, retain product details, care instructions, photographs of concealed work and the location of spare pieces. Confirm who to contact if a joint, drain or slab needs attention.

Questions before Your Granite Paving Project Starts
Should I book the installer before the paving arrives?
You can agree a provisional programme, but allow time for delivery, inspection and resolving discrepancies before laying. Confirm availability and access arrangements before committing to an inflexible start date.
Can an existing patio base be reused?
Only after its condition, material, depth, stability and drainage have been assessed for the new paving. The presence of an old patio does not prove that its base is suitable or that the proposed finished levels will work.
Should granite slabs be mixed from different packs?
Review representative slabs together first. Selecting across compatible packs can help distribute natural variation, but unexpected colour or specification differences should be clarified with the supplier before installation.
Does a drainage channel allow paving to be raised beside the house?
Not by itself. The finished level must be part of a suitable wall or threshold detail that protects against moisture and preserves ventilation. A channel also needs a suitable outlet; it does not replace the complete design.
What should I do if a slab looks damaged before laying?
Set it aside, photograph the issue and its identifying information, and contact the supplier before cutting or fixing it. Keep the piece available for assessment and avoid assuming that every mineral line is a crack.
What records should I keep after installation?
