The best jointing material is one approved for the granite, joint dimensions, bedding system, drainage and expected traffic. Choose the product before laying so the joints and construction can accommodate its requirements.
What joint width should you use for granite paving?
For sawn-edge granite patios, around 5–10 mm is a practical starting range, subject to slab tolerances and the chosen jointing product. Some products accept narrower joints, but their minimum width is not a universal recommendation for the paving. Avoid butt-jointing the slabs.
How deep should granite paving joints be?

A joint can look wide enough at the surface while being obstructed below by bedding mortar or primer. Measure the usable opening along its depth, not just the visible gap between slab faces. Keep the planned joint space clear during laying without removing the support beneath the stone.

Check compatibility with 20 mm slabs: A product requiring a 25 mm filled joint cannot be accommodated within the slab thickness alone. Select an approved alternative or obtain a designed detail that provides the required depth while retaining slab support. Do not scrape bedding out from beneath slab edges to improvise a deeper joint.
Why Product Dimensions Cannot Be Generalised
For example, Azpects EASYJoint Original states minimum dimensions of 3 mm wide and 20 mm deep and requires a free-draining site. Its granite-specific staining precautions must also be checked.
Nexus ProJoint TITAN states minimum dimensions of 5 mm wide and 25 mm deep, and says a permeable bedding mix is not required. These examples illustrate differing specifications; neither is a blanket recommendation for every granite patio. Follow the current instructions for the exact product supplied.

These categories contain products with different requirements. A two-component resin is not automatically suitable for every driveway, and a grout labelled for outdoor tiles is not automatically appropriate for every granite paving installation.
Traditional mortar pointing also needs a specified formulation and application method. Do not assume the bedding mix is automatically the correct pointing mix, or add extra water simply to make the material easier to spread.
Match Permeable Jointing to the Drainage Design
A permeable joint allows water into the layers beneath the paving. The design must provide somewhere for that water to go. A porous joint over an unsuitable, poorly drained construction does not create a permeable patio.
Equally, a product approved over a less-permeable bed does not eliminate the need for surface falls and drainage. Check how the selected system manages both surface water and water entering the joints.

Resolve specification conflicts before installation: If the jointing product requires a drainage or bedding arrangement different from the planned construction, obtain a compatible system specification or choose another product. Do not weaken the specified bedding mix merely to accommodate a preferred tub of jointing compound.
How to Point Granite Paving
1. Check the Paving Is Ready
Confirm that the bedding has gained sufficient strength for access and jointing. Use the bedding manufacturer's requirements and actual site conditions rather than assuming the patio is ready the following morning. Investigate rocking or loose slabs before filling the joints.
2. Prepare the Joint Space
Remove debris, cutting slurry and obstructions to the specified depth. Keep slab edges intact and preserve support beneath them. Check awkward locations separately, including corners, drainage channels and the perimeter of inspection covers.
3. Complete a Trial Area
Test the proposed material, colour and cleaning method on spare stone or a small agreed area. Let the trial cure and dry before judging its appearance. Check whether the manufacturer requires pre-treatment for granite; any treatment must be compatible with joint adhesion and the installation system.
4. Follow the Product's Moisture and Mixing Instructions
Some compounds require thorough pre-wetting, while other materials need different surface conditions. Use the instructions for the exact product. Where mixing is required, follow the stated proportions and mixing time, and do not add water or split component packs unless expressly permitted.
5. Fill to the Required Depth
Work in manageable sections and fill the joint completely by the specified method. Compact or tool where required, checking junctions and cut edges for voids. A smooth-looking surface is not proof that the joint is filled underneath.
6. Clean within the Working Window
Remove excess material using the prescribed tools, water quantity and timing. Do not spread residue across a larger area or leave contaminated wash water to dry on the stone. Keep waste out of drains and follow the product's disposal instructions.
7. Protect and Cure
Protect the work as instructed and observe the stated restrictions for foot traffic, furniture, vehicles and cleaning. Permitted application weather and curing conditions are different matters: a product that can be applied in rain is not necessarily ready for use while it remains wet.
Avoid Cement Haze and Resin Residue
Granite's textured surface can retain fine particles and binders. Pale cement haze often contrasts strongly with black stone, while darker or oily marks may be prominent on silver grey granite. Staining risk is not confined to one colour.
If a mark remains, identify the residue before selecting a cleaner. Cement deposits, resin films and oily staining need different approaches. Obtain advice from the jointing manufacturer and test any approved treatment first; a generic brick-acid wash is not a universal remedy.
Movement Joints, Edges and Access Covers
Ordinary rigid pointing and movement joints perform different jobs. Where the design requires movement accommodation, use the specified flexible detail rather than filling the gap with the main pointing material. The joint layout should address fixed structures, changes in construction and any existing movement joints below.
Keep inspection covers removable and drainage openings clear. At exposed paving edges, provide the support or restraint required by the construction rather than expecting hardened pointing to hold an unsupported perimeter together.

Can I use a jointing product requiring 25 mm depth with 20 mm granite?
Not within the slab thickness alone. You need an approved construction detail that provides the full required joint depth without undermining slab support, or a compatible product with different depth requirements.
Should granite be sealed before pointing?
Only where the selected jointing system requires or recommends a compatible pre-treatment. Check the granite-specific instructions and test first. Do not apply a treatment that interferes with the joint's adhesion or the paving system.
How much jointing compound will I need?
