The most common ordering mistake is to calculate the full wall area, add straight-panel wastage and then add corner boxes without subtracting the wall-face area already covered by those corners. The second is to treat every product as if its straight panels and corners have the same packaging. They do not.

Quick Stone Cladding Calculation

  1. Calculate each wall section: width × height = gross area.
  2. Add all wall sections together.
  3. Deduct substantial doors and windows where appropriate.
  4. Measure every external corner and required reveal vertically.
  5. Convert corner height into corner boxes using the selected product specification.
  6. Subtract the face area covered by those corner boxes from the straight-panel area where the product data provides that area.
  7. Add the appropriate cutting and selection allowance.
  8. Divide by the coverage per straight-panel box and round up.
  9. Check the result against the actual quantity options on the live product page.

Step 1: Divide the Project into Rectangles

Draw a simple elevation of every wall. Divide L-shaped elevations, gables, columns, chimney breasts and stepped walls into measurable rectangles or triangles. Label each section so the installer can check the same dimensions on site.

For a rectangular section:

Area = width × height

A wall 4.8 m wide and 2.4 m high has a gross area of 11.52 m². If a project contains several elevations, calculate them separately before adding the results. This makes errors easier to find and helps distinguish straight areas from corner returns.

Step 2: Deduct Doors and Windows Carefully

Large openings can normally be deducted, but deducting every small vent, socket or narrow opening may leave the order short. Panels still have to be cut around the opening, and the offcuts may not fit another location because of the Z-shaped ends, stone arrangement, colour or required orientation.

  • Deduct a large door or window when it removes a meaningful area of full panels.
  • Do not automatically deduct tiny penetrations or narrow openings.
  • Measure the stone required above, below and beside every opening separately.
  • Include window and door reveals if they will also be clad.
  • Allow more cutting where openings interrupt several panel courses.

Step 3: Measure External Corners in Vertical Metres

Measure from the bottom to the top of each external corner that will use purpose-made corner units. Add columns, pillars, wall ends and relevant window or door returns only where the chosen detail actually requires corner pieces.

For example, two full-height external corners at 2.4 m each require 4.8 vertical metres of corner coverage. If the selected product states that one corner box covers 0.8 m of wall height, the basic requirement is:

4.8 m ÷ 0.8 m per box = 6 corner boxes

Alternatively, calculate by individual pieces. If each corner course is 200 mm high, a 2.4 m corner needs 12 corner units. Divide the total number of units by the number supplied per box and round up.

Important: A product option may display vertical coverage, face area, number of pieces and another combined linear dimension. For a wall corner, use the stated vertical height coverage or verify the calculation from the number and height of the corner units. Do not assume that every number followed by “lm” represents buildable corner height.

Step 4: Avoid Counting Corner Coverage Twice

Corner units wrap around two faces. If the original wall measurements extend fully to the corner, part of that measured face area will be covered by the corner units rather than straight panels. Where the product page states the corner-box face area, subtract that area from the straight-panel requirement.

Use this sequence:

Straight area before wastage = net wall area − total face area supplied by corner boxes

Do not make this deduction from an assumed corner size. Use the actual selected product specification because leg lengths, unit construction and pack contents vary. Some products combine straight pieces and corner components in one box, while other cement-backed ranges list straight and corner boxes separately.

Step 5: Choose a Realistic Wastage Allowance

Wastage is not simply material thrown away. It covers end cuts, damaged edges, unusable offcuts, colour blending, natural variation and the need to avoid repeating obvious stone patterns. A basic rectangular wall with few interruptions may need less cutting than a fireplace, column or elevation containing many openings and short returns.

Step 6: Convert Square Metres into Boxes

Product coverage controls the final order. If one straight-panel box covers 0.44 m² and the calculated straight requirement including allowance is 17.59 m²:

17.59 m² ÷ 0.44 m² per box = 39.98 boxes

The order must be rounded up to 40 complete boxes, giving 17.60 m². Never round down because the decimal looks small. Also check whether the live product page offers that exact box quantity or only preset split-pack and full-pack options.

Paving Slabs UK product formats can change, and mesh-backed and cement-backed panels do not necessarily share the same box contents. Treat the live specification and selected variant as the controlling information.

Worked Example: Two Walls, One Door and One External Corner

The following example demonstrates the method. It is not a quotation or a universal pack specification.

Before ordering, confirm that the selected product really supplies 0.8 vertical metres and 0.44 m² of corner face per box, that three corner boxes are available with the required straight quantity, and that the installer accepts a 10% straight-panel allowance for this layout.

Columns, Pillars and Four External Corners

A freestanding rectangular pillar has four external vertical corners, not one. A 1.2 m-high pillar therefore contains 4.8 vertical metres of corner. Because corner units wrap onto both faces, they may cover much of a narrow pillar and dramatically reduce the straight-panel requirement.

Draw each face and show the corner leg projection before ordering. A very narrow face may not accept a straight panel between two opposing corner units without cutting. Purpose-made corner availability should be confirmed before the pillar dimensions are finalised.

Gables, Slopes and Triangular Areas

For a triangular gable:

Triangle area = base × vertical height ÷ 2

Add the rectangular wall below it separately. Sloping cuts normally increase waste, and narrow pieces at the top may be unsuitable or visually poor. The installer should prepare a course layout rather than relying only on the mathematical area.

Do Not Order from Area Alone

Quantity is only one part of a safe order. Before purchasing, confirm that the wall can carry the complete installed load, the selected product is suitable for the location, corners match the straight panels, and any required mechanical restraint, movement joints, copings and flashings have been designed.

  • Subtract verified corner face coverage from straight area.
  • Add a cutting and selection allowance suitable for the layout.
  • Round up to available complete boxes or pack options.
  • Order matching straight and corner material from one batch where possible.
  • Keep a small number of suitable spare pieces for future repairs where practical.

How do I calculate square metres of stone cladding?

Multiply each wall's width by its height, add the wall sections and deduct substantial openings where appropriate. Then account separately for corner coverage and wastage.

How much extra stone cladding should I order?

Around 10% is often used for a straightforward rectangular wall. Multiple corners, openings, short returns, strong colour selection and complicated cuts may require 10%–15% or a project-specific allowance approved by the installer.

Are stone cladding corners measured in square metres or linear metres?

Always round up to a complete available pack. Products cannot be ordered as a mathematical fraction of a box unless a specific sample or split option is offered.

Why should the material be ordered from one batch?

Natural stone varies in tone, mineral pattern and texture. Ordering sufficient material together reduces the risk of a later top-up looking noticeably different.
