Although ordering to the precise measured area may appear economical, it can easily lead to material shortages, installation delays, additional freight charges and unnecessary layout compromises.

Four Reasons Why a Wastage Allowance Is Essential

1. Boundary Cuts and Trimming Losses
Patios and pathways rarely accommodate a perfect grid of full-sized paving slabs. Units often need to be cut around walls, steps, drainage gullies, inspection covers, curved borders and other fixed features. Once a slab has been cut for a particular edge or corner, the remaining offcut may not be suitable for use elsewhere, resulting in an unavoidable loss of material.
Projects incorporating diagonal patterns, sweeping curves or multiple obstacles will normally require a higher allowance than a straightforward rectangular installation.
2. Natural Stone Colour Blending
Natural stone is quarried rather than manufactured to a completely uniform appearance. Variations in colour, tone, veining, texture and surface character are therefore normal and form part of the material’s natural appeal.
Professional installers should select and blend slabs from several crates as work progresses, rather than laying one complete crate at a time. This cross-crate blending produces a balanced, natural-looking finish and avoids concentrated areas of noticeably lighter or darker stone. 3. Site Handling and Minor Transit Damage
Natural stone and porcelain paving are heavy, rigid materials transported through specialist pallet networks. Despite careful packaging and handling, occasional edge chips or minor fractures can occur during freight, unloading, movement around the site or installation.
Many pieces with limited edge damage can still be used successfully for boundary cuts, corners or smaller infill areas. The amount of material required depends heavily on the selected laying pattern. - Complex layouts and diagonal cuts: Allow the full 15% where the design includes curves, diagonal laying, multiple obstacles, intricate borders or extensive edge cutting.
- Stone setts and cobbles: Add approximately 3%–5% for alignment adjustments, border cuts and site handling.
These percentages are general planning guidelines. The final allowance should be confirmed with your installer and adjusted to reflect the paving format, laying pattern, shape of the site and number of cuts required.
The True Cost of Under-Ordering
Attempting to reduce the initial cost by ordering only the exact measured coverage can prove significantly more expensive later. Heavy paving products are normally transported through specialist tail-lift pallet networks. If an installer runs short by only two or three slabs near the end of a project, supplying that small quantity may still involve picking, protective repacking, pallet handling and nationwide freight.
The resulting delivery charge can be disproportionately high compared with the value of the replacement stone. The installation may also need to stop while additional material is sourced and delivered, potentially creating further labour costs and scheduling problems.
There is also no guarantee that a later order will come from the same production or quarry batch. With natural stone in particular, material extracted from a different quarry seam may display noticeable variations in colour, tone or texture. Ordering sufficient material at the outset therefore helps preserve visual consistency across the completed project.
